These days there are abundance of opportunities to invest in start ups verses five years ago, and if by chance you happen to be self employed. You should absolutely take the initiative to start a IRA or some sort of retirement account, as you're already aware there is no 401k for the self employed. At least not yet anyway, which is why we wanted to highlight a few options for those who are willing to invest in their future and the future of their loved ones.

There is also more crowd funding resources for start up companies then there ever where before, be certain that the ones you choose to use. Affords you the options to invest in a company or cause that you're passionate about, and stand to own a stake in the company as well. Some campaigns will sell you a pre released product and accepts funds as a gift, without offering you anything in return other than thanking you for your donation.

My two favorite platforms are Startengine & Wefunder which both offers you a chance to invest in future companies, and offers you a chance to put your money to work for you. By offering stocks in a giving company which you choose to invest in, make sure you do your homework on a campaign of interests. Some may only offer you perks or even a simple thank you for your donations.
